From Fairgrounds to VAT: My Spirited Journey in Tax
Hello to all the wonderful readers and the Deeks VAT Consultancy community!
It’s not every day that one gets to share their personal and professional journey in such a platform as Tax Advisor. It’s an even rarer occasion to have those tales resonate with a larger audience, reminding us of the shared experiences, trials, and triumphs that shape our careers. Today, I’d like to delve a bit deeper into my story and share some pivotal moments that led me to where I am today. It is also a privilege for the Tax Advisor Magazine to invite me to feature.
A Unique Beginning: The Fairground Life
While many might know me as the dedicated VAT specialist, few are aware of my roots in the fairground business. The cacophony of carnival music, the thrilling rides, and the spirit of festivity were all part and parcel of my childhood. It was an unconventional classroom, one where I learned resilience, creativity, and the value of hard work. Welding, repairing engines, and managing the family’s traveling amusement arcade were my first steps into the world of business.
The Allure of VAT
My transition from the dynamic world of fairgrounds to the intricate maze of VAT might seem unusual. But at its core, both worlds require a deep understanding of systems, a knack for problem-solving, and the ability to communicate complex ideas simply. VAT, with its ever-evolving nature and its intersection with various industries, provided the perfect canvas for me to leverage these skills.
The CIOT Odyssey
The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) qualification is not just another feather in my cap. It was a rigorous academic challenge, one that I embraced wholeheartedly. While the journey was demanding, the rewards have been manifold. Today, as a Chartered Tax Adviser, I can attest to the doors this qualification has opened for me, both in terms of opportunities and in garnering the trust of clients and employers alike.
The Future of Tax
The digital revolution is upon us, and the tax industry is not immune. As AI and machine learning permeate various sectors, there’s speculation about the role of tax advisors in this new landscape. My belief? While technology will undoubtedly simplify processes, the nuanced understanding, interpretation, and strategic planning in tax will always require the human touch.
